Maddie. Short for Magdalene
Where are you from?
I’ve been living in Toronto for the past 17 years. Before that… a little bit of here and a little bit of there.
Who do you dance with (Soloist/Company/Studio affiliation)?
At the moment, I am a soloist mostly, but I also perform alongside many talented women at the Dark Side Studio. In the past I’ve had the privilege of being part of Lavish Dance Company, Urban Nomad and also performing a duet with Laura Atma. I always look forward to working in collaboration with other dancers and sharing creative ideas.
How long have you been dancing?
I’ve been belly dancing for eight years at the Dark Side Studio under Audra Simmons. However, my love of dance began years earlier on the dance floors of many goth clubs around the city.
What is your favourite music?
I usually lean towards the dark and moody but I listen to a wide range beyond that. It all depends on my mood. Currently I’m listening to Fever Ray, DeVotchKa, Tom Waits, Alt-J, Glitch Mob, Cryptex, Portishead, and Massive Attack.
Favourite costume piece?
I don’t really have a favorite. Each item has it’s own personality and shows a different aspect of who I am.
I am detail oriented and my own worst critic.
I am detail oriented and my own worst critic. It’s because of this that I push myself to improve everyday.
I will be dancing at The Dark Side Studio for the This Ain’t Egypt show on March 25th.
Because I must. It’s where my passion lies at the moment.
Who inspires you?
I find inspiration everywhere. Everyone has something to share, so any list I provide will be incomplete at this point;) I will say, however, that Audra Simmons has played a big role in my growth as a bellydancer. I am also lucky to be surrounded by many other talented performers and artists, both here and abroad, that challenge and inspire me on a daily basis.
