The Spring Tribal Series taught by Orkideh Serpentina is a good foundation for group improvisational, tribal bellydance. It runs Sunday evenings from 5 to 6:30pm, starting March 3rd at Habeeba’s Dance Studio.
Orkideh began studying bellydance in 2000 in New York City. Her foundation may have been in American Cabaret with Safiya, a member of the Anahid Sofian Dance Company, but she fell head over heels for tribal in 2004. She was certified as an ATS teacher by Carolena Nerricio in October 2009.
Orkideh’s bellydance teachers in various classes and workshops have included Susan Frankovich, Sarah Locke, Anahid Sofian, Ariellah, Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, and Dalia Carella. She also has studied kathak in New York City with Najma Ayshah and in Toronto with Joanna DeSouza.
She explains the stylistic differences as executed by Fat Chance Bellydance and Gypsy Caravan, as well as her troupe, The Serpentina North Ensemble’s own unique stylings. There is a focus on good posture, technique, and how to dance together by leading and following.
Orkideh also stresses how pilates is a good practice to augment executing crisp movements and is working towards her certification as a pilates instructor.
Full class card (10 weeks) is $160
Half class card (5 weeks, must be used within the Spring series) is $90
Drop-ins are $20, space permitting.
