Dumbek Classes

Dumbek Classes with Suleiman Warwar and Kevork Guerguerian are conducted on many levels. Lead drummer for the [Arabesque Orchestra], composer and master dumbek artist Suleiman Warwar upholds Arabesque’s high standards of making sure the students receive impeccable technique training so that they are given the potential and ability to excel to very high levels of expertise. With this solid foundation, students explore the many rhythms and styles of Arabic music. In the more advanced levels, students are taught the rules of improvisation and given opportunities to play with live Arabic bands and the tools to create drum solos for Bellydancers. Students are also introduced to other Arabic percussive instruments such as the Qatim, Riqq, Daff, Dhaholla and Mazhar. Those who wish to perfect these other instruments may inquire with Suleiman.

Dumbek Class Levels

Foundation
This level is for students with very little to no experience playing the Dumbek. All the basic Dumbek techniques and rhythms will be performed. Understanding how to count, read and write the basic rhythms is included as well.

Level 1
Students will learn how to embellish and create variations with new hand techniques, speed and dexterity.

Level 2
Have perfected everything in Beginner, they no longer need notes to read from and are ready for combinations of rhythms, complicated and rare rhythms, very specialized hand techniques and accompanying live music.

Students must bring their own dumbek to class and be able to practise on their own as well.
We can rent drums to students during class for $5.

For those who are not sure which dumbek they need to acquire before the first class are welcome to use and possibly share the one extra dumbek available. Arabesque Boutique imports the highest quality professional Sumbatis (large dumbek) and Dumbeks from Cairo in many styles and colours including inlaid mother-of-pearl. Come in and browse. Prices range from $95 – $350.
